Saree Care 101: How to Store, Wash, and Preserve Your Sarees for Years
A good saree is an investment. Whether it is a silk heirloom passed down from your mother or a brand new Banarasi you just bought, proper care can keep your sarees looking beautiful for decades. Here is everything you need to know.
Washing Your Sarees Always check the fabric before washing. Silk sarees should be dry cleaned only. Cotton and linen sarees can be hand washed in cold water with mild detergent. Never wring or twist a saree — gently squeeze out the water and hang to dry in shade.
Storing Silk Sarees Never store silk in plastic bags. Silk needs to breathe. Wrap your silk sarees in a soft muslin cloth and store them in a cool, dry place. Refold them every few months along different lines to prevent permanent crease marks.
Preventing Colour Fading Always dry sarees in the shade, never in direct sunlight. For dark-coloured sarees, add a teaspoon of salt to the rinse water the first time you wash them — this helps lock the colour in.
Protecting Zari Work Zari embroidery can tarnish over time. Store zari sarees wrapped in a soft cloth with a small piece of camphor nearby to prevent oxidation. Avoid spraying perfume directly on zari borders.
When to Get a Saree Serviced If you notice loose threads, fading, or damaged embroidery, take your saree to a trusted tailor or weaver for restoration. A little timely care goes a long way.
